If I just installed ILLiad on a new computer, what settings or permissions should I have on my computer?
Symptom
- To get ILLiad running properly, I need to know how to set the permissions for Windows and Office.
Applies to
- ILLiad
Windows Permissions:
The default ILLiad folder is at C:\Program Files (x86)\ILLiad, but older versions will be at C:\Program Files\ILLiad. These permissions will need to be added to the Shared Print drive directory for shared print drives.
Adding Full Control permissions for the Users group of the security settings for the ILLiad folder of C:\Program Files (x86)\ILLiad is necessary for the normal operation of ILLiad. It can be necessary to redo these if they are affected by a Windows Update.
- Right-click on the C:\Program Files (x86)\ILLiad folder and select properties.
- Go to the Security tab, and in the top section, choose Edit
- Click Users Group.
- In the Permissions box, under the Allow column, mark Full Control
- Click OK, and then again on the other window.
Word Settings
Over the years, Word macros have been the source of security concerns for Microsoft over the years, and they decided to put more controls on their use. Setting these permissions helps ILLiad run smoothly.
For Office 2010 and above:
Enable the ILLiad template macros by checking these settings:
- Select "Options" located towards the bottom of the left-hand menu
- Select "Trust Center" located at the bottom of the left-hand menu
- Select "Trust Center Settings" located at the bottom far right.
- Select Macro Settings on the left side.
- Then click on the "Enable Macros" bottom.
- Choose OK.
- Choose OK again.
Disable the "enable printing" and "enable editing" macros by following the directions below:
- In Microsoft Word (or Excel), select the "File" tab located at the top left-hand side.
- Select "Options" located towards the bottom of the left-hand menu
- Select "Trust Center" located at the bottom of the left-hand menu
- Select "Trust Center Setting" located at the bottom far right
- Select "Protected View" located at the bottom of the left-hand menu
- Uncheck the following three option located under "Protected View"
- ☐Enable Protected View for files originating from the Internet
- ☐Enable Protected View for files located in potentially unsafe locations
- ☐Enable Protected View for Outlook attachments
- Select OK
- Select OK again
For Office 2013:
Word 2013 has a feature called Reading View that will open the templates as "Read Only," which disables mail merges. Here's how to turn that off:
- Go to File and then Options in Word
- In the General tab, go to the section for Startup options
- Make sure "Open e-mail attachments and other uneditable files in reading view" is unchecked.
