November 2024: Bridging the gap between records and linked data

Description

Not every library is on the same trajectory of adopting linked data. Some are already there, some are looking to make the leap, while others are still assessing how linked data maps to their current and future workflows. OCLC is committed to supporting libraries wherever they are in the journey to linked data. Our recent work to add WorldCat Entities to WorldCat records is one example of how libraries, not quite ready for linked data, can start to leverage the benefits of linked data while remaining in a MARC-centric workflow. OCLC has also integrated much of the WorldCat Entities and Meridian editing functionality into current MARC cataloging tools like Record Manager to allow catalogers to start to work with and integrate linked data into their current cataloging workflows. Jeff Mixter and Charlene Morrison will discuss how this work can impact libraries today as well as how they fit into the strategy for eventual migration to linked data-based bibliographic management.

October 2024: Using MARC for new RDA elements

Description

Have you been wondering when you would use field 881? Does where to record an extension plan term for a website keep you up at night? Are you confused about which MARC field to use for the language of representative expression? Kate James will answer these questions and more when she presents MARC bibliographic format updates designed for new RDA elements. The session will include MARC examples with relevant RDA instructions, helping catalogers to better understand use cases for some of the new elements.

Note: This webinar focuses on the official RDA (which your library may not have implemented yet), not the original RDA.
