Edit an entity

Discover how to edit an entity in OCLC Meridian.

Overview

The Edit screen allows you to add, edit, and delete entries and references associated with an entity (e.g. significant dates, related works, etc.). On the edit screen, you will see the same information that is available on the view screen, with the following additional abilities:

Edit an entity

  1. Search for an entity using the search box.
  2. From the search results screen, click an Entity Label to open it in the entity viewer.
  3. Click the Edit tab in the top navigation.

Add or edit an entry

  1. Click Add next to the section title (e.g. Key Information).
    Or
    Click the pencil button (Meridian_edit_button.png) next to an entry within a section.
  2. Update the information in the entry as desired. See Entity sections.
  3. Click Save.

Entity sections

Add entries to sections within an entity to provide more detail about the entity, such as the date it was created or an additional name it is known by.

Important notes:

  • The sections available for an entity differ by entity type
  • The details you can add or edit for an entry differ by entity type and section

A description and guidelines for updating entries for each section are provided below. 

Section title Details
Key Information

Add or edit the following fields:

  • Language of Content (can only be set when adding a new Key Information entry)

     Note: See Language of entity for details on setting this field.

  • Entity Label
  • Description
  • Aliases
Significant Dates

Any significant dates associated with the entity (e.g. Creation date, Date of Birth, etc.).

  1. For Date Type, Date Period, and Format, select an option from the drop-down lists.
  2. For Value, type in a numerical date or choose it from the calendar.
  3. Select the BCE check box to indicate that the date occurred Before Common Era.
  4. (Optional) Add or remove reference URL(s).
Characteristics

Any identifying characteristics associated with the entity (e.g. Occupation, Genre, Language, etc.).

  1. For Descriptor, select an option from the drop-down list.
  2. Provide a corresponding Value.
  3. (Optional) Add or remove reference URL(s).
Names

Any additional names associated with the entity (e.g. a surname).

  1. For Name Type, select an option from the drop-down list.
  2. Enter the name in the Value text box.
  3. Select the name Language of the name from the drop-down list.

     Note: The Language list includes every cataloged language. 

  4. (Optional) Add or remove reference URL(s).
Linked Data Identifiers

Enter a URL to point to the Linked Data Identifier.

Other Identifiers

Additional identifiers (e.g. ISBN, ISSN). 

  1. From the Type drop-down list, select a type of identifier.
  2. Enter the associated ID.
Related Persons and Organizations

An existing Person or Organization entity with a direct relationship to the one you are editing (e.g. Influenced By, Related Organization, etc.).

  1. From the Relationship drop-down menu, select a value that describes the relationship of the person or organization to the entity you are editing.
  2. Use the Entity Label search box to find a matching entity associated with the related person or organization.
  3. (Optional) If applicable, add date information.
  4. (Optional) Click Change Selection under an existing related person or organization to search for a new entity.
  5. (Optional) Add or remove reference URL(s).
Related Events

An existing Event entity with a direct relationship to the one you are editing.

  1. From the Relationship drop-down menu, select a value that describes the event's relationship to the entity you are editing.
  2. Use the Entity Label search box to find a matching entity associated with the related event.
  3. (Optional) Click Change Selection under an existing related place to search for a new entity.
  4. (Optional) Add or remove reference URL(s).
Related Places

An existing Place entity with a direct relationship to the one you are editing. 

  1. From the Relationship drop-down menu, select a value that describes the relationship of the place to the entity you are editing.
  2. Use the Entity Label search box to find a matching entity associated with the related place.
  3. (Optional) Click Change Selection under an existing related place to search for a new entity.
  4. (Optional) Add or remove reference URL(s).
Related Works

An existing Work entity with a direct relationship to the one you are editing. 

  1. From the Relationship drop-down menu, select a value that describes the relationship of the work to the entity you are editing.
  2. Use the Entity Label search box to find a matching entity associated with the related work.
  3. (Optional) Click Change Selection under an existing related work to search for a new entity.
  4. (Optional) Add or remove reference URL(s).
Other Related Entities

Any other existing entity with a direct relationship to the one you are editing.

  1. From the Relationship drop-down menu, select a value that describes the relationship of the related entity to the entity you are editing.
  2. Use the search box to find a matching Entity Label associated with the related entity.
  3. (Optional) Click Change Selection under an existing related entity to search for a new entity.
  4. (Optional) Add or remove reference URL(s).

References

You can choose to enter one or more reference URLs when adding an entry to an applicable section. Reference URLs provide a source that confirms the piece of information you are adding to the entry. A reference can be added for entries in the following sections:

  • Significant Dates
  • Characteristics
  • Names
  • Related Entities

Click References in the top navigation to view a list of all references that have been added to an entity.

To delete a reference:

  1. Navigate to the entry with the reference you would like to remove.
  2. Click the pencil button (Meridian_edit_button.png) next to the entry.
  3. In the References section, click the minus button (Meridian_delete_button.png) next to the reference URL you would like to remove.

Delete an existing entry in a section

  1. Click the minus button (Meridian_delete_button.png) next to an entry.
  2. In the Delete Entry dialog, click Delete.
