Answer
.mrc files are actually just MARC binary files. Common file extensions for MARC files are .mrc, .dat, and .bin. That said, in Windows File Explorer, you can flip the extension to/from .mrc to/from .bin or .dat as needed to conform to the file naming expectations of your system.
To change the file extension in Windows 10:
- Open Windows File Explorer and navigate to the folder containing your .dat file.
- Click the View tab. Check the File name extensions option.
- Find the .dat file, right-click the file, choose Rename, and enter the new file extension .mrc
- A dialog box may come up asking if you are sure you want to change the file extension. Click Yes.
To change the file extension in Windows 11:
- Open Windows File Explorer and navigate to the folder containing your .dat file.
- Click the View dropdown. Select Show > File name extensions.
- Find the .dat file, right-click the file, choose Rename, and replace the .dat file extension with .mrc.
- A dialog box may come up asking if you are sure you want to change the file extension. Click Yes.
