Items are appearing as Not Available. Why are these items unavailable in Discovery?

Symptom
  • A group of records have been in the status Not Available since we migrated to WorldShare Management Services (WMS).

  • We are not sure on how to make records show as "Available" in Discovery.

  • In some cases we  have been able to check in items barcode by barcode and that seems to reset the status

Applies to
  • WorldShare Circulation
  • WorldCat Discovery
Resolution

If an item is unavailable in Discovery, it is because it is also unavailable in the library's OPAC.  For WMS libraries, this means the item is unavailable in WorldShare Circulation.   Discovery relies on the OPAC to provide information about the availability of items in the library's collection. If an OPAC does not have information about an item, or if the item is marked as unavailable, then Discovery will also display the item as unavailable.

How can I make an unavailable item available in Discovery?

To make an unavailable item available in Discovery, you need to check it in to the OPAC. This can be done by scanning the item's barcode at a circulation desk or by using the OPAC interface.

What are some common reasons why items may be unavailable in the WorldShare OPAC: WMS?

Here are some common reasons why items may be unavailable in WMS:

  • The item has not been checked in.
  • The item is damaged or missing.
  • The item is being held for a patron.
  • The item is part of a special collection that is not available for general circulation.
