WorldCat Validation release notes, February 2024

Introduction

This release of changes to WorldCat Validation involves the following new features, enhancements, and bug fixes.

    • Edit Change to Encoding Level (Elvl) 8 Bibliographic Records  
  • Bug fixes
    • Correction to drop-down for Subfield $2 in Holdings Field 506

These enhancements and fixes are the result of announcements of new MARC elements and codes by the Library of Congress as well as feedback and requests from members of the OCLC community.
 

New features and enhancements

OCLC-MARC Validations of New MARC Codes Announced September 12-December 05, 2023

You may now use all new MARC Codes announced by the Library of Congress in the following LC Technical Notices:

Classification Scheme Source Codes

The following source codes have been added to the Classification Scheme Source Codes list for usage in appropriate fields and elements.

Genre/Form Code and Term Source Codes 

The following source codes have been added to the Genre/Form Code and Term Source Codes list for usage in appropriate fields and elements.

Standard Identifier Source Codes

The following source codes have been added to the Standard Identifier Source Codes list for usage in appropriate fields and elements.

  • bbrainza - BookBrainz author
  • bbrainzp - BookBrainz publisher
  • bbrainzw - BookBrainz work
  • ktgw - Work ID of the Union Catalogue Database of Japanese Texts (https://kokusho.nijl.ac.jp/)  
  • rijkspid - Rijksmuseum persistent identifiers (Amsterdam, Netherlands: Rijksmuseum)

Subject Heading and Term Source Codes

The following source codes have been added to the Subject Heading and Term Source Codes list for usage in appropriate fields and elements.

MARC 21 Bibliographic Update No. 37 (Announced December 2023)

You may now begin to use the following changes to Bibliographic elements implemented as part of OCLC-MARC Bibliographic Update for December 2023, based on the MARC 21 Bibliographic format changes announced in MARC 21 Bibliographic Update No. 37 (December 2023):

  • New Bibliographic field 023 (Cluster ISSN) has been defined - See Note
  • In existing Bibliographic field 022 (International Standard Serial Number):
    • Removal of subfields $l (ISSN-L) and $m (Canceled ISSN-L) - See Note
  • In existing Bibliographic field 532 (Accessibility Note):
    • New subfield $3 (Materials specified) has been defined

 Note: New field 023 and removal of subfields $l and $m in field 022 will be implemented in a future validation release. 

MARC 21 Authority Update No. 37 (Announced December 2023) to the Validation Rule Set that Includes All Valid Elements of MARC 21 Authority Format

You may now begin to use the following changes to Authority elements implemented as part of OCLC-MARC Authority Update for December 2023, based on the MARC 21 Authority format changes announced in MARC 21 Authority Update No. 37 (December 2023).

 Note: These changes apply only to the OCLC-MARC Authority validation rule set that includes all valid elements of MARC 21 Authority Format and cannot be used in the LC/NACO Authority File.

  • New Authority field 023 (Cluster ISSN) has been defined
  • In existing Authority field 022 (International Standard Serial Number):
    • Removal of subfields $l (ISSN-L) and $m (Canceled ISSN-L)   
  • In existing Authority field 371 (Address) field definition and scope have been redescribed 
  • In existing Authority field 372 (Field of Activity) field definition and scope have been redescribed
  • In existing Authority field 374 (Occupation) field definition and scope have been redescribed
  • In existing Authority field 376 (Family Information) subfield $2 has been redescribed 

Name Authority Cooperative (NACO) participants cannot use these authority format changes in the LC/NACO Authority File at this time. The Library of Congress and OCLC will announce the implementation of these elements for use in name and subject authority records in the LC/NACO Authority File at a future date.

MARC 21 Holdings Update No. 37 (Announced December 2023)

You may now begin to use the following changes to Holdings elements implemented as part of OCLC-MARC Holdings Update for January 2023, based on the MARC 21 Holdings format changes announced in MARC 21 Holdings Update No. 37 (December 2023):

  • New Holdings field 023 (Cluster ISSN) has been defined
  • In existing holdings field 022 (International Standard Serial Number):
    • Removal of subfields $l (ISSN-L) and $m (Canceled ISSN-L)

Edit Change to Encoding Level (ELvl) 8 Bibliographic Records

Full-level cataloging authorizations and roles can now update non-BIBCO and non-CONSER records with encoding level (ELvl) 8 to another valid encoding level. Non-BIBCO and non-CONSER records can be identified by the absence of MARC field 042 with any of the following codes: “isds/c", "nlc", "nsdp", "lcac", "lccopycat", "msc", "premarc", "pcc", or "nst". 

Bug fixes

Correction to drop-down for Subfield $2 in Holdings Field 506

In Record Manager, the subfield $2 dropdown menu for the holdings field 506 was without contents. This issue has been resolved, and the dropdown menu now shows a list of the Access Restriction Term Source Codes.

Correction of MARC relator code dcg to dgc

The MARC relator code for Degree Committee member has been corrected from "dcg" to "dgc" to align with the MARC Code List for Relators.
