MARC Code List for Relators
The following relators have been added to the MARC Code List for Relators list for usage in appropriate fields and elements.
- wfs [Writer of film story] – A person contributing to a motion picture resource by writing an original story expressly for the resource, not based on any other existing work. For the author of a screenplay, use screenwriter. For a person who adapts novels or stories for the screen, use adaptor.
- wft [Writer of intertitles] – A person contributing to a motion picture resource by writing dialogue or expository intertitles inserted intermittently between sequences of the film. Generally, the person who wrote the intertitles for a motion picture during the silent era.
- wts [Writer of television story] – A person contributing to a television resource by writing an original story expressly for the resource, not based on any other existing work. For a person who writes a script for a television program, use television writer. For a person who adapts novels or stories for television, use adaptor.
Name and Title Authority Source Codes
The following source code has been added to the Name and Title Authority Source Codes list for usage in appropriate fields and elements.

MARC 21 Bibliographic Update No. 38 (Announced June 2024)
You may now begin to use the following changes to Bibliographic elements implemented as part of OCLC-MARC Bibliographic Update for June 2024, based on the MARC 21 Bibliographic format changes announced in MARC 21 Bibliographic Update No. 38 (June 2024).
- In existing Bibliographic field 055 (Classification Numbers Assigned in Canada), the field definition and scope were “updated in order to reflect contemporary usage.” Second Indicator (now renamed to Type, completeness, source of call/class number, formerly Type, completeness, source of class/call number) and its values were updated to reflect the revised field definition and scope:
- 0 - LCC (or LCC-compatible) call number assigned by LAC
- 1 - Complete LCC (or LCC-compatible) class number assigned by LAC
- 2 - Incomplete LCC (or LCC-compatible) class number assigned by LAC
- 3 - LCC (or LCC-compatible) call number assigned by a Canadian organization other than LAC
- 4 - Complete LCC (or LCC-compatible) class number assigned by a Canadian organization other than LAC
- 5 - Incomplete LCC (or LCC-compatible) class number assigned by a Canadian organization other than LAC
- 6 - Other call number assigned by LAC
- 7 - Other class number assigned by LAC

- In existing Bibliographic fields 082 (Dewey Decimal Classification Number) and 083 (Additional Dewey Decimal Classification Number), new subfields $0 (Authority record control number or standard number) and $1 (Real World Object URI) have been defined.
- In existing Bibliographic field 341 (Accessibility Content), the field definition and scope “was broadened in order to accommodate the recording of all accessibility features of a resource. The change also applies to the definitions of subfields $a and $2.” New subfields $0 (Authority record control number or standard number) and $1 (Real World Object URI) have been defined.
- In existing Bibliographic field 383 (now renamed to Numeric Designation of Musical Work or Expression, formerly Numeric Designation of Musical Work), there have been revisions to the field definition and scope, and to the definitions of subfields $a (Serial number), $c (Thematic index number), and $e (Publisher associated with opus number). First Indicator (previously undefined) is now Type of entity and has these three values defined:

- 0 - Work
- 1 – Expression
- In existing Bibliographic fields 580 (Linking Entry Complexity Note), 773 (Host Item Entry), 774 (Constituent Unit Entry), and 787 (Other Relationship Entry), new subfield $5 (Institution to which field applies) has been defined.
- In existing Bibliographic fields 647 (Subject Added Entry-Named Event) and 648 (Subject Added Entry-Chronological Term), new subfields $e (Relator term) and $4 (Relationship) have been defined.
MARC 21 Authority Update No. 38 (Announced June 2024) to the Validation Rule Set that Includes All Valid Elements of MARC 21 Authority Format
You may now begin to use the following changes to Authority elements implemented as part of OCLC-MARC Authority Update for June 2024, based on the MARC 21 Authority format changes announced in MARC 21 Authority Update No. 38 (June 2024).
Note: These changes apply only to the OCLC-MARC Authority validation rule set that includes all valid elements of MARC 21 Authority Format and cannot be used in the LC/NACO Authority File.
- In existing Authority fields 082 (Dewey Decimal Classification Number) and 083 (Additional Dewey Decimal Classification Number), new subfields $0 (Authority record control number or standard number) and $1 (Real World Object URI) have been defined.
- In existing Authority field 383 (now renamed to Numeric Designation of Musical Work or Expression, formerly Numeric Designation of Musical Work), there have been revisions to the field definition and scope, and to the definitions of subfields $a (Serial number), $c (Thematic index number), and $e (Publisher associated with opus number). First Indicator (previously undefined) is now Type of entity and has these three values defined:

Name Authority Cooperative (NACO) participants cannot use these authority format changes in the LC/NACO Authority File at this time. The Library of Congress and OCLC will announce the implementation of these elements for use in name and subject authority records in the LC/NACO Authority File at a future date.
Relationship between Bibliographic 008/39 and field 040 subfield $a NLC
A validation check has been created to generate an error message if a cataloging user changes 008/39 (Cataloging source) to a value other than blank when field 040 (Cataloging Source) subfield $a (Original cataloging agency) contains the symbol NLC. A similar check already exists for the symbol DLC.
