These enhancements and fixes are the result of announcements of new MARC elements and codes by the Library of Congress as well as feedback and requests from members of the OCLC community.

OCLC-MARC Validations of New MARC Codes Announced    April 25-August 29, 2023

You may now use all new MARC Codes announced by the Library of Congress in the following LC Technical Notices:

Access Restriction Term Source Codes

The following source code has been added to the Access Restriction Term Source Codes list for usage in appropriate fields and elements.

Cartographic Data Source Codes

The following source code has been added to the Cartographic Data Source Codes list for usage in appropriate fields and elements.

Classification Scheme Source Codes

The following source code has been added to the Classification Scheme Source Codes list for usage in appropriate fields and elements.

  • fna - Fundstellennachweis FNA (Deutsche Nationalbibliothek)
  • fnb - Fundstellennachweis FNB (Deutsche Nationalbibliothek)

Entity Type Source Codes

The following source code has been added to the Entity Type Source Codes for usage in appropriate fields and elements.

MARC Code List for Relators

The following relator has been added to the MARC Code List for Relators for usage in appropriate fields and elements.

  • anc [Announcer] – A person who makes announcements on television or radio to identify stations, introduce and close shows, announce station breaks, commercials, and public service information. May also read news flashes and describe other public and sporting events.
  • aue [Audio engineer] - A person or organization contributing to a resource by managing the technical aspects of sound during the processes of recording, mixing, and reproduction.
  • aup [Audio producer] - A producer responsible for most of the business aspects of an audio recording.
  • bka [Book artist] - A person who is responsible for exploiting the book form or altering its physical structure.
  • cad [Casting director] - A person responsible for most aspects of assigning roles and duties to performers.
  • cop [Camera operator] - A person who operates a motion picture camera to film a moving image resource.
  • dbd [Dubbing director] - A person responsible for the general management and supervision of adding new dialog or other sounds to complete a soundtrack.
  • djo [DJ] - A person who mixes recorded tracks together during a live performance or in a recording studio to appear as one continuous track.
  • edd [Editorial director] - A person or organization having legal and/or intellectual responsibility other than creation for the content of a serial, integrating resource, or multipart monographic work.
  • fon [Founder] - A person responsible for initiating a diachronic work.
  • mka [Makeup artist] - A person who contributes to a moving image production or for a musical or dramatic presentation by applying makeup and prosthetics.
  • mup [Music programmer] - A person who uses electronic audio devices or computer software to generate sounds.
  • mxe [Mixing engineer] - A person or organization contributing to the audio content of a resource by supervising the technical aspects of a recording session.
  • nan [News anchor] - A person who is in overall control of the presentation of a news or current affairs television program.
  • onp [Onscreen participant] - A person contributing to a nonfiction moving image work by taking an active role as a participant.
  • rap [Rapporteur] - A person responsible for reporting on the proceedings of meetings of an organization.
  • rxa [Remix artist] - A person that manipulates, recombines, mixes and reproduces previously-recorded sounds.
  • sde [Sound engineer] - A person responsible for recording sound on set during filmmaking or television production for inclusion in the finished product, or for use by the sound designer, sound effects editors, or foley artists.
  • sfx [Special effects provider] - A person or organization responsible for the activities of workers engaged in designing and creating on-set special effects appearing in a moving image or sound recording, such as on-set mechanical effects and in-camera option effects.
  • swd [Software developer] - A person who researches, designs, implements or tests software.
  • tau [Television writer] - A person contributing to a television resource by writing or collaborating with a group of writers on a script for a television program, such as an episode of a television series.
  • tlg [Television guest] - A person invited to appear in a television program, often a television talk or variety show. Guests normally appear as themselves or as characters in skits.
  • tlh [Television host] - A person contributing to a television resource by leading a program that includes other guest, performers, etc.
  • vfx [Visual effects provider] - A person or organization responsible for the activities of workers engaged in designing and creating post-production visual effects appearing in a moving image.

The following source code has been added to the Name and Title Authority Source Codes list for usage in appropriate fields and elements.

MARC 21 Authority Update No. 36 (Announced June 2023) to the Validation Rule Set that Includes All Valid Elements of MARC 21 Authority Format

You may now begin to use the following changes to Authority elements implemented as part of OCLC-MARC Authority Update for June 2023, based on the MARC 21 Authority format changes announced in MARC 21 Authority Update No. 36 (June 2023).

 Note: These changes apply only to the OCLC-MARC Authority validation rule set that includes all valid elements of MARC 21 Authority Format and cannot be used in the LC/NACO Authority File.

  • In existing Authority field 368 (Other Attributes of Person or Corporate Body):
  • Existing subfield $d (Title of person) has been redescribed
  • New Authority field 361 (Structured Ownership and Custodial History) has been defined
  • New Authority field 857 (Electronic Archive Location and Access) has been defined

Name Authority Cooperative (NACO) participants cannot use these authority format changes in the LC/NACO Authority File at this time. The Library of Congress and OCLC will announce the implementation of these elements for use in name and subject authority records in the LC/NACO Authority File at a future date.

MARC 21 Holdings Update No. 36 (Announced June 2023)

You may now begin to use the following changes to Holdings elements implemented as part of OCLC-MARC Holdings Update for January 2023, based on the MARC 21 Holdings format changes announced in MARC 21 Holdings Update No. 36 (June 2023):

  • New Holdings field 361 (Structured Ownership and Custodial History) has been defined
  • New Holdings field 857 (Electronic Archive Location and Access) has been defined

Bug fixes

Normalization No Longer Ignores Certain Retain Characters

In WorldCat bibliographic records, an outdated normalization conversion was causing a validation error for fields differing only in the presence or absence of certain characters (e.g., $a C# (Computer program language) vs. $a C (Computer program language)). The characters were the dollar sign ($), British pound sign (£), and number sign (#). Access points differing only in the presence vs. absence of these characters will no longer be considered duplicates.
