Introduction

This release of changes to WorldCat Validation involves the following new features, enhancements, and bug fixes.

  • New features and enhancements:
    • OCLC-MARC Validations of New MARC Codes Announced February-April 2022
  • Bug fixes:
    • Correction of Validation for Bibliographic and Authority Fields 043

These enhancements and fixes are the result of announcements of new MARC elements and codes by the Library of Congress as well as feedback and requests from members of the OCLC community.

New features and enhancements

OCLC-MARC Validations of New MARC Codes Announced February-April 2022

You may now use all new MARC Codes announced by the Library of Congress in the following LC Technical Notices, except as noted:

Accessibility Content Source Codes

The following source code has been added to the Accessibility Content Source Codes for usage in appropriate fields and elements.

Description Convention Source Codes

The following source code has been added to the Description Convention Source Codes list for usage in appropriate fields and elements.

  • pccrda - LC-PCC Metadata Guidance Document (Library of Congress, Program for Cooperative Cataloging) (https://www.loc.gov/aba/rda/mgd/mg-introduction.pdf)
    • From the Official RDA Toolkit LC-PCC Metadata Guidance Document:

      pccrda -- A MARC Descriptive Convention Source Code used in the 040 field of Name Authority Records to indicate that the authority record is valid for PCC implementation of Official RDA, even though the record may not be compliant with the Official RDA Toolkit.

      In a PCC implementation of Official RDA, not all of the IFLA Library Reference Model (LRM) modellings for bibliographic identities will be followed. This decision was made by the PCC Policy Committee in March 2021. The Descriptive Convention Source Code “pccrda” will be used in subfield $e (Description Conventions) of the MARC 040 (Cataloging Source) field in all name authority records created under the PCC implementation of Official RDA to identify the records as following the PCC conventions of Official RDA implementation.
     

     Note: OCLC reminds users, do not use the "pccrda" code until both of the following have occurred:

    • The Program for Cooperative Cataloging implements the Official RDA Toolkit, and
    • The Program for Cooperative Cataloging develops and issues guidelines for use of the new code

Genre/Form Code and Term Source Codes

The following source code has been added to the Genre/Form Code and Term Source Codes list for usage in appropriate fields and elements.

  • tgfc - Termes de gènere i forma en català (Biblioteca de Catalunya)

MARC Authentication Action Code List

The following source code has been added to the MARC Authentication Action Code List for usage in appropriate fields and elements.

  • cyac - Children's and Young Adults’ Cataloging Program (Washington, DC: Library of Congress)

    Code cyac signifies that the cataloging was done as part of the Library of Congress Children's and Young Adults' Cataloging Program (formerly called the Library of Congress Annotated Card Program) whereby summaries and children's subject headings are added to facilitate discovery of a resource by a juvenile audience.

Standard Identifier Source Codes

The following source codes have been added to the Standard Identifier Source Codes list for usage in appropriate fields and elements.

  • fuoc - Fundació per a la Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (FUOC) product identifier
  • lmhl - Modern Hebrew Literature - a Bio-Bibliographical Lexicon (Lexicon of Modern Hebrew Literature) (Ohio State University) (https://u.osu.edu/galron.1/introduction/)

Subject Category Code Source Codes

The following source codes have been added to the Subject Category Code Source Codes for usage in appropriate fields and elements.

  • cyac - Children's and Young Adults’ Cataloging Program (Washington, DC: Library of Congress)

    Code cyac signifies that the cataloging was done as part of the Library of Congress Children's and Young Adults' Cataloging Program (formerly called the Library of Congress Annotated Card Program) whereby summaries and children's subject headings are added to facilitate discovery of a resource by a juvenile audience.
  • proqsc - ProQuest Subject Categories (https://about.proquest.com/globalass...s-academic.pdf)

The following source codes have been added to the Subject Heading and Term Source Codes list for usage in appropriate fields and elements.

  • cyac - Children's and Young Adults’ Cataloging Program (Washington, DC: Library of Congress)

    Code cyac signifies that the cataloging was done as part of the Library of Congress Children's and Young Adults' Cataloging Program (formerly called the Library of Congress Annotated Card Program) whereby summaries and children's subject headings are added to facilitate discovery of a resource by a juvenile audience.
  • proqsc - ProQuest subject categories (https://about.proquest.com/globalass...s-academic.pdf).

     Note: This code was previously defined for use in Subject Category Code Source Codes. Usage has been expanded to Subject Heading and Term Source Codes.

  • thla - ThLA - Thesaurus for landscape (Fondazione Benetton, Treviso, Italy) (https://www.fbsr.it/en/)

Bug fixes

Correction of Validation for Bibliographic and Authority Fields 043

In Bibliographic field 043 (Geographic Area Code) and all OCLC-MARC Authority field 043 (Geographic Area Code) rule sets, all codes in subfield $a (Geographic Area Code) are validated against the MARC Code List for Geographic Areas, regardless of the presence of subfield $2 (Source of Local Code).  Codes in subfield $b (Local GAC Code) are not validated because they are locally assigned.  The existing relationship between the presence of subfield $b and the presence of subfield $2 remains in place.
