Why are ISBNs appearing as exponential numbers or with the leading zeroes stripped out?

Applies to
  • Local Holdings Maintenance
  • LHOP reports
Answer

Long numbers will become exponential when the field is formatted as a Number or General format type. They will usually lose their leading zeroes as well. If you open the original LHOP file sent to you, you'll see that the full ISBN is present and shows as straight text, though.

To fix this, open a new blank spreadsheet in Excel and import the file into it using File > Open. During the Import process you get the option to format the fields before displaying them. Format that field and any other numeric fields to be Text so they appear as a whole rather than in exponential format.

There is Microsoft documentation on formatting long numbers correctly.
