User requirements

Install the Label Program

You need local administrator privileges when you install to allow the Label Program to update the necessary system files.

Run the Label Program

You must be a Power User to retain and modify settings and other program files system-wide.

Use the Label Program with the OCLC Connexion browser

You must install Version 1.22 (or higher) of the Label Program to view and print labels for single records in the browser interface to OCLC Connexion. After you install Version 1.22, the Label Program opens automatically and displays a label when you open a record in Connexion and click View Label in Label Program in the Actions list.

For printing labels for multiple records, you create a file using the Connexion browser (default name: Label.svs). Flag records in the bibliographic save file for which you want to print labels and click Create Labels for Flagged Records in the Action/Sort list. You can copy the file anywhere the Label Program (or any compatible label printing software) is installed, and then import the file into the Label Program or other software to view, edit, and print the labels.

See Take Actions on Bibliographic Records > Create labels in Connexion browser documentation for more information.

The Label Program is not needed for the OCLC Connexion client

If you use the Windows-based client interface to OCLC Connexion, you do not need to install the Label Program. The Connexion client provides the same functions as the Label Program for viewing, editing, and printing labels, but as part of the software itself (go to the View menu and click Label or go to the File menu and click Print Label(s)). See Print Labels in Connexion client documentation for instructions.

Quick instructions

This section gives brief instructions for experienced Label Program users for downloading installation files from the OCLC Web site to your workstation and then installing the Label Program from the downloaded files.

For first-time Label Program users: Jump to section 4 for detailed instructions on downloading the installation files. Jump to section 5 for detailed instructions on installing the program after download.

Before installing:

  • Close any open applications on your workstation before installing the Label Program, including any Virus Protection programs.
  • Check to be sure you meet user requirements.

Quick instructions: Download installation files

  1. Create a temporary folder in Windows Explorer (e.g., create a folder named Label in the x:\temp folder, where x is the letter of your hard drive).
  2. Go to the installation instructions and begin at step 3, Download software. A compressed, self-extracting *.exe file downloads to the temporary folder you created.
  3. In the temporary folder, double-click the *.exe file. In the Win-Zip Self Extractor window, click Unzip.
  4. Double-click Setup.exe.
    • If you are installing the Label Program for the first time, a Setup program opens. Follow prompts to complete installation.
    • If you are upgrading or reinstalling the Label Program, a Maintenance program may open. Select Repair to upgrade or reinstall.
  5. (Optional) Right-click the temporary folder containing the installation files and, on the shortcut menu, click Delete.

Upgrade or reinstall

To upgrade or reinstall the Label Program, you do not need to uninstall the previous version first. The Setup Maintenance program installs the Label Program over an existing version. In step 4 above, select one of the following:

  • Modify – Click to select and add or remove individual program components to install. The Label Program keeps your existing settings for label formats and printing.
  • Repair (recommended for most users) – Click to reinstall all of the new program upgrades. The Label Program keeps all of your existing settings.
  • Remove – Click only if you need to uninstall the Label Program. Your existing settings are lost. For more on uninstalling, see Uninstall the Label Program.

The following detailed procedure is for new users.

  1. Open the installation instructions in your browser.

  11. On the Install Shield Wizard Complete screen, the Label Program may ask if you want to shut down and restart the workstation or restart later.
    • If you do not get this prompt, click Finish. Installation is complete.
    • If you get this prompt and want to restart your workstation, accept the default Yes and click Finish.
    • If you do not want to restart your workstation immediately, select No and click Finish.

Note: If you get this prompt, OCLC recommends that you restart the workstation before running the Label Program. After the workstation restarts, you are ready to use the Labels Program.

  12. (Optional) You may now delete the installation files you downloaded from the Web.
    1. Locate and right-click the temporary folder you created (example name: \label).
    2. On the shortcut menu, click Delete.
