Thumbnails for First 10 Pages Show "Restricted File" After Login

Symptom

When accessing a restricted collection in CONTENTdm, users may find that the first 10 page thumbnails in the right-hand side panel display as "Restricted file". This occurs even after the user has successfully logged in with an authorised account.

Key observations:

  • The main viewer (left side) displays the content correctly after login.
  • Thumbnails for page 11 and onwards display correctly.
  • Only the initial batch of thumbnails (pages 1–10) appears blocked.

Resolution

This issue is typically caused by the web browser caching the "restricted" state of the thumbnails from before the user logged in. To resolve this, follow these steps:

  1. Clear Browser Cache and Cookies: Remove temporary internet files and cookies for your repository URL.
  2. Restart the Session: Close and reopen the browser, then log back into the repository.
  3. Navigate the Item: If thumbnails still do not appear, use the navigation arrows to move to the next set of pages (e.g., pages 11–20) and then navigate back to the first 10 pages. This often forces the browser to refresh the thumbnail preview.
