Introduction

This release of CONTENTdm provides 1 new enhancement. This feature will help you manage more complex workflows, including:

  • Accessibile Alt Text for Image Items

Administrative actions

Configure a collection to be able to display Alt Text for images.

Action

Add a metadata field to a collection to support alt text.  These steps may also be found in CONTENTdm documentation for setting up an accessible alt text field.

  • You must add a special metadata field to each collection that you wish to have Alt Text for images
    • Go to CONTENTdm Administration --> collections tab --> fields --> [Select a collection and press change] 

    • Select add field and add a new metadata field with this exact text for the field name, lowercase and all one word

      • We recommend setting the field settings to Hide=Yes and Search=No, but you may choose any field settings you wish based on your local practice.

      • Once the initial field has been created, you may also then go back and change the name of the field to be something more descriptive, such as "Alt Text".

New features and enhancements

Accessible Alt Text for Images

By adding a special metadata field per collection, you can now have alt text displayed for images in the alt= tag on the CONTENTdm item view and thumbnail images.  Note the Administrative Actions section above to configure a collection to support Alt Text for images.  

Adding Accessible Alt Text

Using CONTENTdm Administration item editor or Project Client, you may enter descriptive metadata in the alt text field for items and the alt text will appear in the image or thumbnail "alt=" tag.  After entering metadata, always be sure that you approve and/or index items when appropriate.
