Check out items

Learn how to check items out using Digby.

Digby's check out functionality can be used to check out items without returning to the Circulation desk. Digby will also alert users when patrons need to speak with Circulation staff before checking out items (ex. when a patron is suspended or an item is still checked out to another patron).

To check out items using Digby:

  1. Tap Check Out Items on the Digby home screen.
  2. To scan a patron barcode, hold your mobile device over the barcode so that the barcode appears in the camera window at the top of the screen.
    • If better lighting is needed in order to scan the barcode, tap the lightbulb icon to the right of the Type or scan barcode field at the top of the screen to turn on your device's flashlight. Tap the icon again to turn the flashlight off.
  3. To manually enter a barcode instead, tap the Type or scan patron barcode field at the top of the screen. Your mobile device's keyboard will launch, and the barcode can be typed in.
    • If you will only be entering barcodes manually, the camera window can be deactivated by tapping the camera icon located to the right of the Type or scan patron barcode field. Tap the icon again to re-enable barcode scanning.
  4. Once the barcode is successfully scanned, the patron's name and barcode will display on the screen.
    • If the barcode scanned does not match a patron account, a red banner will display with the message "Patron not found. Try again." Tap the x on the banner to clear the message.
  5. Scan or manually enter the barcode of the item to be checked out.
  6. Information about the checked-out item will appear on the screen. The information that displays includes the due date, title, and the item's barcode
    • Items that cannot be checked out will display a red banner with the message "Item can't be checked out. Return item to desk" directing the patron to return to the desk with the item for further assistance. Tap the x on the banner to clear the message and continue scanning items.
  7. A banner confirming the number of items checked out will appear under the patron's name and barcode information. To share a report of the items checked out, tap Share.
  8. Once all items have been checked out, tap Done next to the patron's information.
  9. To clear the list of items that have been checked out, tap Clear. A prompt will appear warning the user that list items cannot be retrieved once they have been cleared from the list. Tap OK to confirm and clear the list. This will also clear the information of the patron, and a new patron barcode can be entered.
