Why does the format (Book) filter disappears when switching to Libraries Worldwide?

Symptom

The Format filter (e.g., Book) Disappears, reduces, or changes ......

  • After:
    • Selecting formats such as Article / Chapter, and/or
    • Switching from My Library to Libraries Worldwide

Applies to

  • WorldCat Discovery
  • Refine Results / Facets panel

Cause

This is expected behaviour due to how Discovery generates facets across different search scopes.

  • Switching to Libraries Worldwide changes the search from:

    • Local library data → Global WorldCat data
  • The global dataset:

    • Combines records from many libraries
    • Includes inconsistent or mixed format metadata
  • As a result, Discovery may not reliably generate detailed format facets.

Explanation

No fix is required.

When using Libraries Worldwide, Discovery may:

  • Hide or remove the Format filter (e.g., Book)
  • Reduce available format options
  • Replace it with broader facets such as:
    • Material Type
    • Content Type

In some cases:

  • The filter may still exist but:
    • Appears under a different label, or
    • Moves within the Refine Results pane

  • The behaviour is by design
    • Facets are more stable and detailed in My Library because the data is more consistent
    • Libraries Worldwide prioritises broader results over strict filtering

Guidence/ Workaround

  • For precise format filtering (e.g., Book only):

    • Use My Library scope
  • For broader discovery across libraries:

    • Use Libraries Worldwide
    • Expect fewer or simplified filters

Additional information

Global data = Gives mixed/inconsistent formats

My Library/ Local data = Used for accurate format filtering
