When I select the "article, chapter" format as a search filter, the "subject" area of the search filters disappears.

Subject headings do not apply to article/chapter content. They come from Dewey Decimal, Library of Congress and NLM classification numbers. Since articles aren’t given any of these classifications, they are not assigned subjects.
