WorldCat Discovery release notes, June 2023

Release Date: June 21, 2023

The following release notes are for the JUNE 21, 2023 release of WorldCat Discovery.

WorldCat Discovery June Release Highlights

This release of WorldCat Discovery includes the following enhancement as well as a bug fix:

  • Access $5 information for the MARC 585 Exhibition Note

Recommended actions

Configure the new WorldShare ILL request form

WorldCat Discovery libraries using WorldShare ILL are invited to configure the new WorldShare ILL request form. This new form is highly customizable to support library and patron needs.

For more information on how to configure this new experience, please see the WorldShare ILL release notes, May 2023

This form replaces the WorldCat Discovery Request Form for WorldShare ILL customers using WorldCat Discovery. The WorldCat Discovery Request Form will be officially retired on 31 July 2023. We recommend you configure the new WorldShare ILL form in advance of that date so your library can benefit from the new experience as soon as possible.

If you cannot switch to the new form before 31 July, we will move your library to the new form on that date to ensure continuous access to ILL for your library and its users.

Include Request ID with problem reports

When reporting an issue with WorldCat Discovery, it is extremely helpful to include the Request ID. The Request ID is found at the bottom of the screen on which the issue occurred. Including this information allows us to directly trace what happened on the request we are troubleshooting.

New features and enhancements

Access $5 information for the MARC 585 Exhibition Note

With this release, users can access $5 information on the item detail record for the MARC 585 exhibition note.

The $5 is used to indicate which institution a 585 entry applies to; this information is important for library users who want to know more about a specific item’s provenance and history.

The below screenshot is an example of how the $5 will display:

Screenshot showing an item details page with $5 information outlined with a yellow box. The $5 display readsL: "For item at National Institutions of Health NIH Library".

While the cataloging of the $5 uses MARC organizational codes, its display in WorldCat Discovery will include the name of the institution referenced by the valid MARC organizational code as it is stored in OCLC systems. The above example demonstrates how the message with $5 information will display: “For item at _____” where the institution name associated with the MARC organizational code is added to complete the message.

No configuration is needed to ensure the display of this subfield.

As a reminder, WorldCat Discovery Premium/WMS libraries have access to additional configuration for the item details display. You can:

  • Reorder fields to change their display order in WorldCat Discovery item details.

  • Demote fields from view, so only users who select “More Item Details” on item details will see them.

  • Select an alternate display label (if one is available).

Bug fixes

StackMap icon now displays in modal

Previously, when a user clicked the link to open StackMap, the StackMap modal displayed with the text “Powered by StackMap” where “StackMap” was a hyperlink. With this release, the modal now displays this text with the correct StackMap icon.

New Content

OCLC is pleased to announce the release of two new databases to the OCLC central index. As a reminder, the central index provides content for WorldCat Discovery and WorldCat.org.

You can enable these databases as a search option in the Licensed Content and Databases module of the OCLC Service Configuration site. Please remember that your library must have a valid subscription to these databases in order to enable them.

Please find below and in the attached document the database names and providers for reference. Documentation of the complete list of databases is available here.

Available in WorldCat Discovery and WorldCat.org

  • Encyclopedia of Turkic Languages and Linguistics Online from Brill: The Encyclopedia of Turkic Languages and Linguistics offers a comprehensive overview of the languages of the Turkic language family and the different ways in which they are and have been studied.

  • HyRead Journal – Taiwan Full-text Database from HyWeb Technology: HyRead Journal is an academic journal database established by Hyweb Co. in 2009. The database includes content of several subjects such as humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, biomedicine, applied sciences and general topics. All the journals are published by academic publishers in Taiwan. Users can browse and download each journal volume and article in PDF format while in the IP range of the library.
