I receive the error, "You do not have permissions to access WorldCat.org" when signing in to WorldCat.org as an institutional user

Symptom

  • When signing in to WorldCat.org as an institutional user, you receive the error, "You do not have permissions to access WorldCat.org. Looks like you are accessing WorldCat.org via your institution. If you wish to use WorldCat.org, please create a personal account."

Applies to

  • WorldCat.org

Resolution

If your library doesn't have one of the WorldCat visibility subscriptions, you won't be able to sign in to WorldCat.org using an institutional account. If you'd like to sign in, create a personal account instead.

If your library has one of the WorldCat visibility subscriptions and you are still getting the error, then you are likely receiving this error because the WorldShare account you are using to sign in does not have the required roles assigned. In order to sign in to WorldCat.org as an institutional user, you need to have one of the following roles:

  • Acquisitions Admin
  • Circulation Admin
  • WorldCat Discovery Admin
  • WorldCat List Manager
  • WorldCat Discovery Staff

If your account should have one of these roles, contact an administrator at your library to have the role assigned. If you are unsure of who your administrator is, contact OCLC Support.
